I thought I was transported to a dance retreat in Hawaii, or an edgy live music San Francisco club featuring flowing contact improv dancers with a mix ballet-like freestyle dancers doing joyous leaps and swirls. ‘Twas a dancers night to behold, and a most unique dance offering in the San Francisco Bay area.
Tonight’s live entertainment provided by the national touring band Antioquia who were throwing out the tones that bring movement to a dancer’s body. The venue’s website Ecstatic Dance LIVE! features them as "For fans of complex but danceable rhythms (somewhere along the lines of Mars Volta meets Manu Chao), wherever Antioquia is playing is most definitely the place to be...”, and Sweets Ballroom Thursday nights from 9 to 11 PM was most definitely the place to be.
As a dancer bonus, before the ED LIVE! session stated Karl Frost, noted San Francisco Contact Improv teacher and performer, taught a free one hour class complete with his own mix of music and facilitation to bring “…open ended exploration of the kinesthetic possibilities of bodies moving through contact….”
